Feed in tariff for Solar PV Panels

The Clean Energy Cashback Scheme also known as The Feed in Tariff scheme (FITs) is an environmental programme which was introduced in the UK by the government on the 1stApril 2010, under powers in the Energy Act 2008.

The main purpose is to support small-scale renewable and low-carbon electricity generation technologies.

The Feed-in tariff can generate income in the following 3 ways:

  1. You get paid for all the energy that you generate whether you use it all or not. (Generation Tariff)
  2.  You get an additional payment for any energy that is not consumed by you and sold back to the grid (Export tariff)
  3. You save money as sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be greatly reduced. A typical home PV system can contribute around 40% of the electricity a household uses in a year.

Important information about the Feed in tariff:-

In order to receive FIT payments you will need to appoint a FIT Supplier who will pay you the FIT Generation tariff for your total generation as well as a tariff for any export to the Grid.

The system has to be installed by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)certified installers under the FIT legislation or under ROOFIT accreditation with Ofgem where applicable.

Since April 2012, to be eligible for the higher FIT rate, the building to which the installation is attached, requires an “Energy Performance Certificate” (EPC) rating of D or above. A lower rating will attract the lower tariff for the life of the system.
